Worker’s Compensation in a recovering economy will be presented by Barry S. Spurlock, MS, CSP. Barry is a dynamic and passionate speaker, a nationally respected expert on the topic of safety performance measurement, and coauthor of CHOMP COMP, The Small
Business Guide to Lower Workers’ Comp Premiums. (8:00 – 11:30 a.m)

Attendees for the morning session are welcome to remain for the monthly ASSE meeting, with guest speaker Todd B. Logsdon, who is a partner with the law firm Fisher & Phillips. Todd’s law practice focuses on discrimination, Family and Medical Leave Act and Occupational Safety and Health Administration issues. (11:30 – noon)

American Traffic Safety Services Association Flagger Certification Course

Thursday, May 13, 2010 - Montgomery County Water Services - Kettering, OH

The ATSSA Flagger Certification Course is based on the MUTCD (Manual of Uniform Traffic Control Devices), the national standard created by the Highway Safety Act. The ATSSA Flagger Certification Program is recognized across the nation. At the end of the course, participants should be able to:

Describe why proper flagging is important;
List the Qualifications of a good flagger;
Use the MUTCD and other standard flagging references;
Ensure traffic control zones follow the basic principles of the MUTCD;
Divide the temporary traffic control zone into areas;
Determine if signs and devices meet the standards of the MUTCD;
Gather all necessary and proper flagging equipment and gear;
Select the proper flagging station/location/position;
Handle (stop, slow, release, direct) traffic using a paddle/flag;
Recognize different types of drivers and how to deal with them;
Setup and handle one-lane traffic on a two-way road;
Use alternative methods to communicate with the other flaggers;
Setup and handle traffic on haul road operations;
Recognize unique or special flagging operations;
Communicate effectively with public, supervisors, and co-workers.

Successful participants will receive a flagger card good for 4 years stating they have met the certification requirements, and be eligible to be placed in ATSSA's National Flagger Database at no additional cost.

Cost: $175, includes all materials, class certificate and wallet card, continental breakfast and lunch.
